look, fandom as a whole certainly has its own built-in biases and problems that need to be addressed

but like

every so often i think about all of the deep, nurturing lifelong friendships that only ever happened because one day two internet strangers were like ‘oh hey, we agree on which fictional characters should kiss!’

people who are right now helping each other survive via connections they initially forged by liking the same sailor moon girl or something

the internet is a goddamn garbage pit but it is also a goddamn miracle

#goddamn garbage miracle

One of my favorite examples of putting in a clue to a mystery and then using a trick to make you ignore it was in a Discworld book I love it because the trick was making it a joke.

Naturally now I can’t remember which book it was, but the gist is Vimes is going around throwing an orange at people to see what they do. One butler guy just watches it hit him and looks (paraphrasing from memory) “bemused at the upper class’s habit of flinging fruit.” Later Vimes reveals that’s what tipped him off that the guy was an assassin. Instead of catching it or flinching, he saw it wasn’t a threat and let it go.

See, a reader knows the old conservation of detail rule.Things can only be so invisible. If a writer is going to mention something, it has to serve a purpose. So a joke is the perfect place to hide a clue; I clearly remember reading that line and then not thinking about it anymore, because obviously that detail was just there to be funny.

This is an excellent point for writers to take note of. It plays with reader expectations in a satisfying way, because while it hides a clue in plain sight, it entertains instead of patronising the reader.

And now I need to go re-read all the Night Watch books.

Another excellent example is in Maggie Stiefvater’s book The Raven Boys. Someone remarks that a character’s hands are really cold, and he deadpans, “I’ve been dead for seven years,” as his first spoken line of dialogue.

Later, we find out he’s a ghost, who has been dead for- you guessed it- seven years.

I sincerely apologize for spamming you all with the Hamilton fanfic controversy, but it’s really giving me so much strength. It’s been a while since we’ve had the kind of scandal that only Tumblr can provide (like the person who robbed graves; the person who mailed their toe to another person so they could make a necklace of it; etc). This scandal is just so fucking good, you know? White American college girl pretends to be a nonbinary Chinese-Pakistani Muslim human-trafficking survivor AND their American WOC wife and they live in India??? And they suffered a miscarriage? And they both have HIV? All so she can scam people out of money and amass kudos on Archive of Our Own for her Hamilton HIV fanfic? And she does this for YEARS? And the person who uncovered it is doing it for revenge because the fake-HIV-fanfic writer made them delete a fanfic about Lin-Manuel Miranda and Thomas Jefferson as cannibal mermaids performing oral sex and unironically accused them of gentrifying cannibalism??? I mean, this shit is fucking gold.

Are there like… any other parents on Vulcan? Like are Sarek and Amanda single-handedly raising every single child they encounter? Every child who sets foot on the planet now belongs to them? Like they meet some other Vulcan’s kid and go “hello, I’m your parent now” and then just take off with them? Is that what happened?

Sarek at the mall: “Sir, madam, I do not know your name, but but I see your son/daughter seems unfulfilled by your bond, constraining his/her philosophical development. As our offspring’s relationship with us is demonstrably superior, would it not be logical for you to surrender custody?”

Other Vulcan: “Your reasoning is cogent and flawless. Live long and prosper, son/daughter. I shall use the funds that were to pay for your schooling to purchase many plush robes in which I will ponder existence more comfortably.”

Vulcan child: “An excellent plan. Thank you for begetting me.”

I know it’s been a while but the funniest part of this for me is still “Sarek at the mall”

How much must Luke Skywalker be freaking out right now?

Can you imagine?

You are moping on your island of self-imposed exile, and then this girl shows up.

  • She’s flying your best friend’s ship. The ship that Han thought he lost for ever. The ship that was stolen and passed through so many hands that he was sure he’d never see it again. The same ship that took you away from home for the first time.
  • She’s accompanied by your personal droid. The droid you left behind and abandoned. The droid that C-3PO was sure would never be the same again.
  • She holds out her hand and she’s holding your father’s light saber. The sword you were sure was lost forever. The light saber that you dropped down a bottomless air shaft on a gas giant thirty years ago. The light saber you knew you would never see again.
  • You look up and you see her eyes. Maz Kanata says that if you live long enough, you see the same eyes looking out of different faces. The girl’s face is different, but those eyes are the same. You know those eyes. They’re the eyes you thought you’d never see again.

And that’s when you know it.

You’re screwed.

They say sometimes the Force works in mysterious ways. Sometimes, the Force will send you little signs. Subtle clues.

Other times, the Force will just beat you repeatedly over the head with a gigantic neon sign that says: “You can’t run away from your past anymore, Luke. I won’t let you. Look, here is your past come back to haunt you. Now deal with it.

You have no idea how much I adore this post with my whole being

I like the idea of the Force sending Luke little signs over the years that it’s time to return to his loved ones, gently increasing in intensity as he ignores them, until it finally gets fed up and shoves the events of Episode 7 into motion, finishing with a flourish of HERE’S YOUR NEW APPRENTICE, SPACE HOBO.
