let’s be real abt ghostbusters for a second because it is not even debatable that after the girls save the city and holtzmann’s face is on television they get 200 calls a day like “there’s a ghost in my bed and i need jillian holtzmann to come and take care of it”

#every time there’s a call from a creepy dude asking for holtz they send kevin#bc 1) there’s never a real ghost so he cant possibly screw it up#2) he always makes the creepy guy feel incredibly inferior#3) kevin feels SO good about himself cause he presses a couple buttons on his fake proton pack and BOOM no ghost ! (via geekholtz)

However it originated, though, the usage of “because-noun” (and of “because-adjective” and “because-gerund”) is one of those distinctly of-the-Internet, by-the-Internet movements of language. It conveys focus (linguist Gretchen McCulloch: “It means something like ‘I’m so busy being totally absorbed by X that I don’t need to explain further, and you should know about this because it’s a completely valid incredibly important thing to be doing’”). It conveys brevity (Carey: “It has a snappy, jocular feel, with a syntactic jolt that allows long explanations to be forgone” “It has a snappy, jocular feel, with a syntactic jolt that allows long explanations to be forgone”).

But it also conveys a certain universality. When I say, for example, “The talks broke down because politics,” I’m not just describing a circumstance. I’m also describing a category. I’m making grand and yet ironized claims, announcing a situation and commenting on that situation at the same time. I’m offering an explanation and rolling my eyes — and I’m able to do it with one little word. Because variety. Because Internet. Because language.

Reblogging. Because linguistics.

This is also really exciting because prepositions are a functional category, which is generally pretty rigid and not prone to expansion. New verbs and nouns and adjectives and adverbs? Sure, all the time. But prepositions?

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT?

Language change~! Because kids these days.

Wait…
If I’m remembering my internet history correctly (and please do correct me if I am wrong) this came from the meme “because reasons” which was shorted from “because of reasons” that came from this comic

http://threewordphrase.com/pardonme.htm

Which means we got a new preposition because dirty joke.
Which is wonderful.

THERMOS

plot twist: it works, mugs suddenly start keeping tea at the perfect temperature for the caster all day. students in muggle studies start experimenting with other muggle jargon and a new generation of magic spells are born, propelling the stagnated wizard community into the technological age

not voting for hillary clinton is a vote for donald trump

But also THERE ARE MORE THAN TWO CHOICES IN THIS ELECTION pls people, I know it seems unlikely, but if everyone who didn’t want either candidate wrote in a name, someone else would stand a chance [and we could live with ourselves, not having voted for one or the other]

no they wouldn’t, literally do not do this

please educate yourself about nader and the 2000 presidential election before encouraging this literally terrible idea

People on both sides say “Not voting for my candidate is a vote for the other guy” No, it’s just not a vote for your fucking candidate. Vote for who you actually believe in, otherwise you might as well not vote.
If Hillary actually gave a damn she would try harder than just say “Vote for me cause I’m not Trump” No bitch, how about you show me something I can believe in.
God damn, no wonder so many people don’t fucking vote.

*sigh*

Let me explain why they say a vote for a 3rd candidate or not voting for Hillary is voting for Trump:

The United States does not have a direct democratic voting system. We have an indirect system called the electoral college. The electoral college is  a compromise between election of the President by a vote in Congress and election of the President by a popular vote of qualified citizens.

To win the Presidency you do not need a popular majority; you need the majority of votes of the electoral college.

The way the college works is that the two parties select the delegates that will serve as electors, and the electors pledge to vote for the candidates, depending on their party affiliation, of either the democratic or republican party. So, when people go vote, they are actually going to vote for electors that have pledged to vote for a specific party/candidate.

Each state is allocated a different number of electoral seats, and so not every state is truly worth the same given that every candidate is racing to secure 270 seats (minimum required to win the election).

What’s important to note is that the electoral college is a winner take all vote in 48 of the 50 states, meaning that the candidate with the higher number of votes in a given state will get ALL of the seats. This is one of the reasons why third party candidates are a wasted vote.

Based on our country’s history, most States around the country have already been defined as either red or blue, because the majority of the people that go and vote in said states tend to stick to either one or the other no matter who is on the ballot. It becomes a bit of loyalism to a party or, more accurately, just a strong distaste towards the ideals of the other party. However, there are a few swing states that really define the elections, for each election cycle they tend to change depending on who is on the ballot.

Now, third party candidates, which is often used as a protest vote, have never worked because a) they are not written into every state ballot, meaning that there are states that don’t offer these candidates given that they did not qualify b) have rarely gotten enough votes to even be up for electoral seats c) ALWAYS end up hurting one of the two candidates, for, in close runs, they can make one of the other two candidates lose a SWING STATE.

This is what happened with Ralph Nader in 2000. The votes that he received hurt Gore in certain states, particularly florida, which led to Bush winning as he had the majority of electoral seats even though he did not have the majority in popular vote.

Now, in the latest poll, it shows that the race between Hillary and trump is very close, and, when third party candidates are involved, it actually HURTS Hillary’s chances.

Now, if it hurts her enough, Trump can obtain the much needed swing states. If he gets over 270 seats (and thus more than hillary) he WILL win the goddamn election.

This is not a year to vote for a third party candidate. This is not a man you want in the oval office of the most powerful country in the world.

There is nothing NOTHING you can pull out that will make Trump the lesser of two evils.

We live in a country that has a two party system, so yes, a vote for a 3rd party candidate or a non-vote IS actually a vote for trump.

Submarine!AU

Bitty doesn’t want to get drafted in the war (WWII) and end up in really bad conditions so he decides to enlist

And like a lot of others he hears that submariners get paid more and get better food, so why not?

And he’s great at almost everything and is overall just a really good person. Like this kid just oozes moral support. He’s basically the perfect candidate

Except he doesn’t do well under pressure. At all. During all of the mock battles he freaks out.

And this really pisses Captain Jack off. So he takes it upon himself to help Bitty. He’s still an ass about it, but they get it so Bitty actually wouldn’t put everyone else at risk and he passes! Yay

Anyway, on this sub there are 80+ men. A captain, eight officers, and the rest are just enlisted men.

So everyone knows Captain Jack, and everyone knows he’s a hard-ass with a great ass. He will not tollerate anything that would jeopordize his crew or the sub, including any racsism or bigotry. Most of the officer are completly suportive of this too (like Shitty). Shitty gives everyone sensitivity talks. All the time. Constantly. And a lot of the crew is totally on board. This is a really progressive line of thought for this time period so the crew gets a lot of shit about it from other guys in the navy.

Shitty is the officer who nobody believes is an officer because he runs around naked most the time (I mean it’s a solid 90 degrees in there most the time but everyone else at least wears shorts) and distills the 180-proof grain alcohol fuel to make the best torpedo juice. Also, no one knows his first name? Like someone even asked Jack what his name was and Jack said that he honestly forgot, he’d have to look at his papers.

The yeomen is some guy that everyone refers to as “Lardo” and he basically lives in his shack (office). Also you do NOT make fun of him for “doing womans work” (aka a secratary) or for looking effeminate. Because he was one of the top five enlisted men and is personal friends with half the officers and the captain. Also, don’t challenge him to any drinking games because you will wind up with the worst hangover and possibly alcohol poisoning

Everyone on the sub knows when Bitty is stressed or homesick because Jimmy or Patrick (the cook and baker) will casually be doing Bitty’s job and all the food for the day will taste like home and love. Multiple people (including officers) have asked Jack in person to switch Bitty’s job to baker. But Jack always tells them that he’s more valuable doing other things. But Jack still turns a blind eye whenever Bitty does take over cooking or baking because it really helps the morals of his men.

Whenever there’s a surface battle, Ransom and Holster man the deck gun while Bitty loads it (before he’s qualified). They are ACE at it. However, Holster gets hit by some shrapnel and Ransom wont leave his side (he helps him with his medical background, idk if he’d be the ships doctor tho). They pass Dex and Nursey on their way to the sick bay so Ransom tells them to man the deck gun. Neither Dex nor Nursey even think about it when they jump up on the seats in the middle of battle. Even though this is their first time manning the gun together much less manning it outside of training, they manage to sink two enemy targets out of three.

After that, Nursey and Dex are paired together whenever they do anything. They are even qualified together. They get racks next to each other, much to their dismay and everyone around them. Because they argue. All the time.

They guys next to Dex and Nursey have started betting on whether or not Nursey is going to push Dex too far and make him snap. They then start arguing over who has to be the one to handcuff Dex to his rack when he does snap. Everything suck until…it doesn’t. No one really notices a difference in their arguing (less mean, more joking and poking fun) until some guy makes a racist comment about Nursey and Dex decks him on the spot. Everyone knew Dex had a temper but he never physically hit anyone before. Not even when people ask if he got all his freckles from the “freckle maker” (aka: The toilet. It has a 9 step process to flush and if you do it wrong it will shoot back up at your face to the delight of the rest of the crew)

Bitty calls Chowder “My sweet summer bubblehead child" and “This subs own personal ray of sunshine.”

If you have any questions feel free to message me! I’d love to hear more ideas on this too. If you write a fic though, I ask if you could send it to me because I’d LOVE to read it!!!! Thank you!

Dearest Duke, might I ask that you share another one of your fabulous theater stories. They never fail to bring me out of the darkest of hours. It would most certainly be greatly appreciated either way. Good day.

dukeofbookingham:

Okay, here’s a short one because I really want to cheer you up but I don’t have time for a long one today. Story time:

Once upon a time I was in what might have been the world’s worst production of Julius Caesar (like, I actually asked friends and family not to come and told the ones who insisted to bring a flask and take a hit every time someone pronounced a word wrong). I was a hat-changer playing like five different roles, one of which was Strato, who–if you don’t remember the six million minor characters, because why the fuck would you?–helps Brutus shish kebab himself in Act V. Obviously this should be a intense moment. So Brutus charges at me like I’m a goddamn matador, I shove a sword under his arm and then we stand there sort of awkwardly hugging and gasping for few seconds before I struggle to lower Brutus (who is a lot bigger than I am) to the floor. And I’m supposed to kneel there, gazing sadly at his noble lifeless body, until Antony and Octavius come in and break up the pity party. Only, on like the third night of run, Antony and Octavius just don’t come in. Nothing happens. I drop Brutus on the floor but nobody enters to interrupt and because the director loves melodrama he’s asked me to cry so I’m awkwardly crouching over Brutus’s body and weeping in absolute silence for like an uncomfortably long time and I sense Brutus getting really tense where he’s lying on the floor pretending to be dead because how the hell is this skinny-ass sophomore girl going to drag him offstage if the winners don’t come in?

Now what you have to understand is that this is a small theater, and it’s theatre in the round, so we’re very closely surrounded by audience members on like every side. And in the middle of this prolonged and agonizing silence, this woman in the front row leans over toward the guy next to her and says, in a completely clear and audible whisper, “This is sad.” And you guys, Brutus and I both fucking lost it. Like, it’s sad??? YOU THINK SO??? NO SHIT????? Brutus barks out a laugh but he’s supposed to be dead so I sort of fling myself on top of him and faceplant on his chest because all hope of subtlety is already gone and with my face smashed in his toga you kind of can’t tell if I’m sobbing or laughing and at this point who even gives a shit.

By this time like half the audience is crying and half is laughing and like at least five or six of them are whispering to their friends “Shut up you guys this is sad” and Brutus and I both just actually want to die and then finally the fucking victory party comes in like five minutes late and Octavius goes “What man is that?” and I sit up with tears smeared all over my face and I’m like as a red as the blockheads from Gumby and Brutus is still lying under me stiff as a board with his fists clenched trying not to laugh out loud and Messala just looks at me like Uhh? Strato? Where is your master? And it took ten years’ acting experience and immense willpower to not just go, “MESSALA. PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER. THIS IS SAD.”

And that is the story of the time Julius Caesar was sad.

This is a callout post for the TSA agent who was incredibly thoughtful and concerned about me flying across the country all alone without an adult and wanted to make sure I knew how to go through security and felt safe and comfortable and explained that, as per the signs, children under 12 can keep their shoes on, and directed me specifically to another agent to help me so I wouldn’t be overwhelmed or afraid.

You were super sweet and kind, and the look on your face when I handed you my driver’s license and you realized I was 25 was priceless.
