I’m only asking because at first i generally thought the hp fandom was so happy w/ jk rowling and how she always communicated with fans, but then there seemed to be this shift when people treated her into some sort of joke?
Hey! Well, yeah. I used to enjoy pretty much everything she put out there, in interviews, then Pottermore, then her Twitter. For me though, as it happened to a lot of people, the “fall” began when she gave that interview to Emma Watson where:
– she praised Kloves (the screenwriter of the majority of the HP movies, responsible for cutting down Ron and Ginny, hinting at Harmony and erasing Hermione’s flaws) for showing that something could have happened between Hermione and Harry when ??? in all seven books she wrote, it’s clear that no, nothing could have happened??
– threw shade at Ron for leaving and said Hermione was a better friend??
– said Ron and Hermione would probably need marriage counselling because Ron needed to grow up??
– And on top of that, that Romione was more self wish-fulfillment than realistic??
That was a slap in the face and her credibility, for me, went downhill because of that. It was ruthless and unnecessary, and it showed that she had become disconnected with the source material that she herself had written
Then there’s the matter of Cursed Child. She didn’t write it, but she collaborated, gave it her blessing and said that it should be considered the eight book… even though it heavily contradicts stuff she wrote in the actual series and has horrible characterizations??
Another big offense is that she said Dumbledore was gay—and no, I don’t believe she did it for publicity and cred back then, it was implied in DH—but then she, the person who wrote the script for the Fantastic Beasts movies, which will show the Dumbledore and Grindelwald relationship more than DH did… said that they weren’t going to explore that side of their relationship. So the only confirmed gay character in the series, and they’re not going to actually write a story that shows that. A lot of people are angry because of that, and a lot of the mockery is in the vein of “X character did this [insert what’s generally a ridiculous thing], but we don’t see it in the books because it wasn’t relevant to Harry’s story”.
Related to FBAWTFT, she also defended the continued casting of Johnny Depp, when she knows first-hand about domestic abuse and there’s quite a bit of it in the HP series, given that Harry lived in an abusive household. It’s just shit.
Apart from that, she continues to give out backstories and info on characters that is just irrelevant and that many people hate because it’s been ten years since the last book was published and they’ve already developed their own backstories. I don’t always agree with the criticism because it’s either like “she said this character was [het/cis/white] and I hate that because I headcanon them as anything but that and now she’s ruined that” or “she said this character was not [het/cis/white] but where is that in the books?? she’s only doing it for diversity cred!” Or overanalyzing the seven books she wrote over ten years ago, that are already published, and criticizing that this minor character wasn’t expanded on enough, or that she never talked about wizards in Antartica. So a lot of it is over the top and I roll my eyes at it; it’s done, she’s not going to rewrite the books, and no, you don’t write the entire backstory of wizards across the globe in a seven book series about an orphan chosen one wizard. BUT, at the same time JKR definitely has had the chance to put her words where her money is, and she didn’t do it. Not “even” to please the fans. So, of course people get angry and take her as a joke, and at this point, they’re right.
Sorry this was long, I hope it makes sense!
