no but really, by now steve probably realizes that if he had jumped, he would have survived, just as bucky did. and that means that if he had jumped, he could’ve gotten to bucky first, and bucky never would’ve become the winter soldier, and never would’ve been tortured, and howard stark wouldn’t have been assassinated, and countless other tragedies wouldn’t have occurred. if he’d only jumped the way bucky did. and bucky, despite the years of brainwashing, still jumped, even though it went against everything he’d been taught for the past 70 years.

and no, steve will never forgive himself for this, which is exactly why I must go crawl into a hole and die
