Bitty doesn’t want to get drafted in the war (WWII) and end up in really bad conditions so he decides to enlist

And like a lot of others he hears that submariners get paid more and get better food, so why not?

And he’s great at almost everything and is overall just a really good person. Like this kid just oozes moral support. He’s basically the perfect candidate

Except he doesn’t do well under pressure. At all. During all of the mock battles he freaks out.

And this really pisses Captain Jack off. So he takes it upon himself to help Bitty. He’s still an ass about it, but they get it so Bitty actually wouldn’t put everyone else at risk and he passes! Yay

Anyway, on this sub there are 80+ men. A captain, eight officers, and the rest are just enlisted men.

So everyone knows Captain Jack, and everyone knows he’s a hard-ass with a great ass. He will not tollerate anything that would jeopordize his crew or the sub, including any racsism or bigotry. Most of the officer are completly suportive of this too (like Shitty). Shitty gives everyone sensitivity talks. All the time. Constantly. And a lot of the crew is totally on board. This is a really progressive line of thought for this time period so the crew gets a lot of shit about it from other guys in the navy.

Shitty is the officer who nobody believes is an officer because he runs around naked most the time (I mean it’s a solid 90 degrees in there most the time but everyone else at least wears shorts) and distills the 180-proof grain alcohol fuel to make the best torpedo juice. Also, no one knows his first name? Like someone even asked Jack what his name was and Jack said that he honestly forgot, he’d have to look at his papers.

The yeomen is some guy that everyone refers to as “Lardo” and he basically lives in his shack (office). Also you do NOT make fun of him for “doing womans work” (aka a secratary) or for looking effeminate. Because he was one of the top five enlisted men and is personal friends with half the officers and the captain. Also, don’t challenge him to any drinking games because you will wind up with the worst hangover and possibly alcohol poisoning

Everyone on the sub knows when Bitty is stressed or homesick because Jimmy or Patrick (the cook and baker) will casually be doing Bitty’s job and all the food for the day will taste like home and love. Multiple people (including officers) have asked Jack in person to switch Bitty’s job to baker. But Jack always tells them that he’s more valuable doing other things. But Jack still turns a blind eye whenever Bitty does take over cooking or baking because it really helps the morals of his men.

Whenever there’s a surface battle, Ransom and Holster man the deck gun while Bitty loads it (before he’s qualified). They are ACE at it. However, Holster gets hit by some shrapnel and Ransom wont leave his side (he helps him with his medical background, idk if he’d be the ships doctor tho). They pass Dex and Nursey on their way to the sick bay so Ransom tells them to man the deck gun. Neither Dex nor Nursey even think about it when they jump up on the seats in the middle of battle. Even though this is their first time manning the gun together much less manning it outside of training, they manage to sink two enemy targets out of three.

After that, Nursey and Dex are paired together whenever they do anything. They are even qualified together. They get racks next to each other, much to their dismay and everyone around them. Because they argue. All the time.

They guys next to Dex and Nursey have started betting on whether or not Nursey is going to push Dex too far and make him snap.They then start arguing over who has to be the one to handcuff Dex to his rack when he does snap. Everything suck until…it doesn’t. No one really notices a difference in their arguing (less mean, more joking and poking fun) until some guy makes a racist comment about Nursey and Dex decks him on the spot. Everyone knew Dex had a temper but he never physically hit anyone before. Not even when people ask if he got all his freckles from the “freckle maker” (aka: The toilet. It has a 9 step process to flush and if you do it wrong it will shoot back up at your face to the delight of the rest of the crew)

Bitty calls Chowder “My sweet summer bubblehead child" and “This subs own personal ray of sunshine.”
