Percy and Annabeth have a lot of cute moments but one of my faves is still at the end of TLO when Annabeth walks into the throne room right after passing out and she and Percy immediately start quietly joking around and laughing while Zeus is talking until Hera gives them both dirty looks. Like. that’s such a normal teenage best friends interaction, complete with an adult scolding them for talking while another adult is talking, even though the characters are literally the complete opposite of normal. Like the teens quite literally just finished fighting a war against a Greek Titan and his army; they’re dirty and bloody and scarred, their clothes and hair in utter disarray, and the adults are literally Greek Gods about to award the teens gifts for their bravery, and yet the dynamic between them all in this moment is just so incredibly normal?? It’s so human it’s almost ridiculous?? But it really drives home the mortality in Percy and Annabeth’s characters. It makes Percy’s refusal of immortality for her and the mortal life she represents–that easy banter between them and friendship and love and promise of growing old together–only that much more beautiful when it happens shortly after this.
